The 6 Most Common Types of Display Devices

Most of the electronic gadgets we use rely on some sort of display. As technology has advanced, standard monitors have now evolved into various forms. Moreover, it is not just the size and weight of the monitors that have changed, but even the quality and efficiency of the devices have become more advanced and user-friendly. Some of the most common types of display devices that are currently favored by a majority of the consumers are as follows:

  1. 1. Cathode ray tube display devices

The cathode ray tube (CRT) display device is one of the oldest types of displays, consisting of a fluorescent blue tube that enables the projection of electrons onto the screen. These displays are usually heavy in nature and are available in a wide variety of sizes (15 to 21 inches). The weight of these display devices is dependent on the size of the tube and the screen. However, the use of this type of display devices is becoming less common due to the advent of more advanced displays.

  2. 2. LCD

LCD (or liquid crystal display) is one of the more recent, common, highly-favored, and technologically-advanced display devices on the market today. The primary innovation in LCD screens has been replacing the tubes of the older CRT displays with crystals for screen projection metrics. The resultant pictures on the screen are of higher quality than the CRTs.

  3. 3. LED

LED (or light emitting diode) display devices differ from the LCD because of a more fluorescent backlight. These displays carry the same screen as an LCD, but are backlit by LED lights, making the quality of picture projection even better than its predecessors. There are quite a few variants of this type of display, as it is used for many different purposes, from TV screens to mobile phones.

  4. 4. Plasma

This type of display device is preferred by those who perform high-grade designing work. These devices enable the projection of light through small-sized cells that light up from the voltage passed through them, resulting in better color saturation and a stronger contrast ratio.

  5. 5. Projectors

These display devices have become quite popular for presentations, as they project pictures onto a larger screen for mass viewership. Through projectors, one can display their ideas on a flat wall or anything flat and, preferably, plain. No screen is necessary.

  6. 6. Organic light-emitting diodes

This form of display device is quite recent. The bright light emission when electricity is passed through the board throws off images without any form of backlighting, allowing for an even crisper and more organic picture.

Display devices have come a long way since they were first developed. However, unlike earlier curved models that allowed people to see the screen clearly from any side, certain angles on newer display device models can easily restrict the viewer’s view. Be sure to carefully evaluate how each display type suits your needs before you purchase a device.
